Auto Workers Face Loss of Health Insurance

Chrysler has closed all its plants until the company comes out of bankruptcy.  GM faces a June 1st deadline when management must come up with its own restructuring plan in an attempt not to go bankrupt and has announced 1000’s of job cuts, plans to idle factories this summer and has even offered the federal government a majority stake in the company.

What does this mean for the security of the many automotive workers who may never return to their jobs?  What will they do for income and protection of their families, homes and assets they’ve worked so long and hard for, not to mention any retirement plans?

Is healthcare even a consideration at this point?  This may not be what most DCX & GM workers think about as they wonder how to keep their homes and feed their families, but it will before too long.  Cobra is far too expensive for an unemployed person to continue paying, even with the nine-month 65% stimulus package incentive.  And if new employment is on the horizon, many employers are not supplying healthcare options, or at best do but make the employee pay for it.

Let’s face it, Our Health and Ability to Work is truly our Greatest Asset.  One can always get back on their feet after a financial set-back; most of us have done this already at one time or another.  But an untimely medical issue, or unexpected passing of a loved one, specifically a bread-winner, is far more devastating than any job loss.  Ever know someone who has had a serious illness or injury?  Has their quality of life gotten better or worse after the condition?

Healthcare in the US is definitely in need of reform, although with the Trillions of added debt the current administration has imposed on our country, they’ll be hard-pressed to find the necessary Trillions of dollars more that will be needed to support a national healthcare plan.  Viable proposals include more than a 10% increase in taxes, charging the individual $200-$400 per month withdrawn directly from their paycheck, or even a mandate on businesses to provide all their employees with a health insurance plan.  There’s even State mandates that propose everyone must acquire their own healthcare or penalties are paid at tax time each year.

Are any of these really going to fix the issues?  What the US needs is regulated services and treatments so the medical industry cannot abuse the insurance programs, and to invest in healthcare standard oversight of treatments, procedures and validation of qualified recipients.

What DCX and GM workers need is help in the form of reliable healthcare and family security that will protect them from financial devastation, at least until, if at all, a national healthcare plan is in place.
