Do something REALLY scary this Halloween – Start a Business

In the B-movie version, you’re staggering through a fog-veiled graveyard of economic doom while zombies cling to your ankles shrieking, “you will fail…you will faaaaaail”.  In a flashback, we see you having coffee with friends and talking about how you’ve always dreamed of having your own business.  Flash forward again and the zombies are back. “Lawyers, government forms, funding, marketing, receeeeession…”, they wail, “Just stay here with us….where it’s saaaaafe.”  Vultures are circling overhead.

In real life, those zombies could be your co-workers, friends and family and the graveyard is the shaky ground that corporate American is perched on.  The vultures?  They’re still circling. (more…)

Have you ever wondered why people choose to start their own business?  Are you wondering what challenges you might face as a small business owner?

Our Affiliate Network at Details in Retail is made up of a diverse group of business owners, so I asked each of them to answer the same 4 questions.  Here’s what Ron Freeman, Metro Detroit Regional Manager for National Insurance Advisors Agency, Inc., had to say.

Question 1: What is the greatest challenge you face as a small business owner in this economy?

Lately, it seems I have to be more creative and put more effort into finding clients.  They don’t seem to be coming to me as much as they used to, although I believe it may have to do with the upcoming election since many are fearful of the repercussions of a specific result.

Question 2: What made you choose to start your own business rather than work for someone else – and do you feel it was the right choice?

I definitely feel it was the best choice.  I would like to believe business owners will continue to have the government’s blessings since we provide more tax dollars and jobs to society. (more…)

5 Ways to Fight Panic

Have your worries about the economy turned your small business into your own personal panic room?   While you’re sitting there waiting for the world to finish ending, why not use that time to be productive?  Here’s a 5-step plan.

1. Panic…in moderation.
   Panic immobilizes you.  Set aside 10 minutes each day to worry and panic, if you must.  Schedule some quality panic time (just reading the news will do), then put that fear aside as a task that is DONE for the day and get back to business. (more…)
