Small Business is Key to Michigan’s Future

Yes, it’s a SMALL world after all. A small business world.
According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small firms have generated 60 to 80 percent of net new jobs annually over the last decade and employ about half of all private sector employees. Weigh that against huge corporate layoffs and you can see where the future is leading us.
“The lesson of history is clear: businesses likely to drive the U.S. economy 25 years from now will come not from large established companies, but from the efforts of nascent entrepreneurs starting companies today.” The Entrepreneur Next Door – A Report Sponsored by the Kaufman Foundation
Our troubled economy actually offers increased opportunity for small business development. Surepayroll’s Small Business Scorecard Review for March 2008, reports the “Sixteenth Straight Month of Small Business Hiring” and “Another Record-Breaking Month for the Small Business Economy.” Their explanation: “… small businesses are an economic complement for large business spending. When large businesses cut back on expenses or layoff employees, they often fill the gap by outsourcing more work to small businesses. Alternatively, they stop doing business with other large businesses and look for cheaper equivalents in the small business economy. So, counter intuitively to some extent, when large businesses suffer, it can actually help small businesses to grow. ”
Paul Bensman, President of Details In Retail, Inc., says it’s a great time to start a business in Metro Detroit. Sure, it sounds scary, but it’s true. Michigan’s sagging economy actually offers increased opportunity for small business start-ups; property costs are low and there’s a large pool of qualified workers available. Most important of all: the unstable job market has shattered the old “safe job” corporate mentality. People are more willing to take risks in order to succeed.
Even with these advantages, there are many challenges. Nearly half of all new businesses fail in the first year. Bensman, a seasoned entrepreneur, created Details In Retail to help businesses beat those odds. His team of business advisors, marketing professionals and affiliated service companies gives small business owners the tools they need for long-term success – and that success is good for Michigan.
